X-Rays
First, we only recommend necessary x-rays. Dr. Young doesn't take x-rays that he wouldn't take on his own family.
We've invested in digital x-ray technology so that our patients receive less radiation with every "picture" we take. Digital x-rays provide a picture of your teeth and their supporting structures on the computer screen in front of you in seconds. Digital x-rays are also better for the environment because they eliminate the need for the chemicals used to develop them.
Standard of care includes four "checkup" x-rays once a year. These x-rays allow us to see between your teeth to check for decay, and also indicate any loss of the bone that maintains your teeth in the jaws.
We also recommend a full mouth series of x-rays once every 5 years for most patients, sometimes more frequently for those at high risk for periodontal disease and decay.
A full mouth series of x-rays is very important because it may reveal serious conditions which the patient is completely unaware of. This may include loss of bone that holds the teeth in the jaws, cysts, abcesses, infections, and even oral cancer.
