The most obvious benefit of a tooth colored filling is that it matches the natural color of your tooth.  On the other hand, amalgam restorations have been used successfully for many years, are less costly, and have good longevity.  Still amalgams discolor your teeth. 

The not-so obvious benefit of tooth colored fillings is that they require less removal of your tooth to place them, because they're bonded into place.  Amalgam is mechanically held in the tooth which requires more removal of tooth structure.  Removing more tooth structure results in a weaker tooth. 

Amalgam restorations have never been scientifically proven to cause any health problems, and it's unethical for a dentist to recommend that they be removed to cure any disease or condition.
