A crown is recommended when a tooth is left weak from extensive decay or previous fillings. The crown serves to prevent the tooth from fracturing. Many of our patients who have large fillings or cavities without a crown placed end up with their tooth breaking. Sometimes the fracture involves the nerve, or pulp of the tooth, causing pain, infection, and need for a root canal. Sometimes the fracture is so severe that the tooth is lost. Therefore, we stress preventing the possible loss of the tooth by placing a crown before it fractures.
